Plakat bettas are the original wild-type body form of Betta splendens. Distinction: short fins (< 1 inch fin trail), athletic body, faster swimmer than longfin halfmoons. Lifespan: typically 5-7 years vs 3-5 for longfins (less stress on swim bladder, less fin damage). Color types: traditional plakat (red/blue body), copper plakat, koi plakat, marble plakat, dragonscale plakat. Why hobbyists prefer: better at swimming in moderate flow, less likely to tear fins on decor, longer lifespan, breed-quality genetics. Tank min: 5 gallons (same as longfin). Tankmates: generally more tolerant than fancy longfins because their fins aren't a target. Avoid confusing with: wild bettas (B. imbellis, B. mahachaiensis) which are different species.
