Cycling

Nitrogen cycle establishment

Definition

Cycling is the establishment of the nitrogen cycle in a new aquarium - growing the bacteria that convert ammonia → nitrite → nitrate.

Practical use

Methods: fishless cycle (dose pure ammonia to 2-4 ppm, wait for it to convert to nitrate, takes 4-6 weeks), live-rock cycle (uncured rock provides bacteria + ammonia source), bottled bacteria (Stability, Bio-Spira, Dr. Tim's One and Only - speeds cycle to 7-14 days). Test ammonia + nitrite + nitrate every 3 days during cycling.
