Copepods

Tisbe pods
DefinitionCopepods are 0.5-2mm crustaceans (Tisbe biminiensis, Tigriopus, Apocyclops) that form the live-food base for mandarin dragonets, larval fish, and SPS reefs.

In depth

Copepods are the foundation of marine refugium ecosystems. Top species in the hobby: Tisbe biminiensis (refugium specialist, hardy), Tigriopus californicus (red, larger, broadcast feeders), Apocyclops panamensis (calanoid, larval-fish food). Why critical for some fish: mandarin dragonets (Synchiropus splendidus + S. picturatus) refuse most prepared foods - copepod populations sustain them. Wrasses and large angelfish also eat them. Larval fish: tigger pods + parvocalanus copepods are the standard food for clownfish + cardinalfish + mandarin breeding. Maintaining culture: dedicated culture vessel + phyto feed. Or a 100+ gallon reef with refugium + chaeto sustains pod populations naturally.
