In depth

Apistogramma cichlids are advanced beginner / intermediate dwarf cichlids. Popular species: A. cacatuoides (cockatoo - hardy, colorful, beginner-friendly), A. agassizii (red-tail), A. borellii (umbrella - peaceful), A. macmasteri, A. trifasciata. Tank min: 20-gallon long for pair. Water: soft, acidic - pH 6.0-7.0, KH 0-4 dKH. RO water + tannin sources (driftwood, catappa) ideal. Diet: live + frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, microworms. Don't rely on flake alone. Behavior: harem-forming - 1 male per 2-3 females in 30g+. Males defend territory with display rather than violence. Breeding: females cave-spawn, become brilliant yellow + black, fiercely defend fry. Tankmates: small soft-water schoolers - rummynose tetras, ember tetras, neons (NOT cardinals - too sensitive). Pencilfish, hatchets, otos for upper water.
